Fun and Healthy Snack Ideas while at Home with the Kids

With everyone practicing social distancing, closing schools and some workplaces, Alberta families are spending their time together at home. We know that this change in routine will have many families looking for creative ways to keep their kids engaged and healthy, so we’ve put together a few simple snack ideas that kids will love. Get them to help out in the kitchen to occupy them for a few minutes and use cooking as an opportunity to talk about the local ingredients that come from your own backyard.

Mini Pita Pizzas

This is an easy DIY pizza snack that kids love to make. Simply lay out mini whole wheat pitas on a baking sheet, drizzle with a bit of canola oil and add a spoonful of your favourite marinara to cover each pita. Set out your favourite Canadian shredded cheese and some fresh veggies and let everyone add their own toppings.

Bake for 5 minutes at 400°C or until the cheese is melted (times may vary). Your

personalized mini pita pizza snacks are ready to eat!

Crispy Chickpeas

For something different, instead of putting out a bowl of chips in the afternoon, consider making crispy chickpeas instead. They’re packed with nutritional value and still have that salty crunch that kids love. This recipe is super easy as it only requires 3 ingredients: Canned chickpeas, canola oil and your favourite seasonings. Check out this Alberta Pulse Grower’s recipe for full directions
